I took this during a forest fire in 2023. I was in school for a math final. I remember the night before I’d begun to smell the burning pine smell familiar to me from childhood, like a fireplace but more acrid. Then, the next day, I went in to my final. I came out to an orange apocalypse. Other students had no clue, no warning, and no mask. I remember kids having panic attacks, thinking about having to walk the miles to a train station in that smoke, without asthma pumps or inhalers. Nobody wore a mask, and nobody was prepared. This isn’t normal.
