I feel in such a daze to witness in real time not just Xbox continuing to set fire to everything they touch but somehow even after Sony played so well that they had a runaway success that they over night went from a few bad moves to just revealing their hand that they're also spiraling into a corporate inferno. Video games are a creative monster like nothing else and these 2 Companies have gotten so bloated with people who don't understand what video games are that the industry feels like it's toppling over. Just a few months ago I couldn't believe what a great year for games it was looking to be and now I feel lost and unsure of what's going to exist of what I loved about games. PlayStation was my Rockstar thoroughly through the PS3 generation, PS4 was a miss in some ways from a leadership and manifest kind of way and now they are a shell. Nobody who grew PlayStation into what is was and what made it great are there anymore. Filled with stock chasing sycophants and boardroom zombies. The only haven left is Steam who is the one big player that isn't a Publicly Traded Company. I'm often calling out Nintendo for the horrible ways they treat their fans but they somehow look like saviors right now. They know that video games aren't made by numbers but by individual humans and that it's important to keep them together, not letting fire spread under their feet. We don't need an Xbox Reset, we need an industry one that keeps corporate greed away from it. Built with the simple idea that people make games for people, not to make number go up.
I could list a good handful of things that aren't to my taste but by far my top is the combat Like you say it's just not as impactful. In KH2 I'd say ground and aerial combat were split about 50/50 but KH3 went much harder into aerial, I'd say it shifted to like 30/70. Playing it again recently it's just so clear how much they just wanted bigger and flashier and did so at the ultimate cost of satisfaction. Attraction moves are a clear indicator, the idea is fine but it's a lightning rod for how they approached making the combat. With more enemies on the field each one means less. KH2 has flash but it wasn't noise. Going in the air was a choice. Gone are little bread and butter moves like the short hop aerial swings. Discussing KH3 is so frustrating because it's so obvious where it diverges from what made KH2s combat so great but there's also a lot of people who just seem to not want to even consider the thing they liked could have been better and shut down people who do talk about it. This is not being caught up in nostalgia, this is they caught Thundaga in a bottle once and there's not another game ever made that scratches the itch that KH2 started even in it's own franchise. P.S. I don't mention other games but I think KH1 is good for all the same reasons as KH2 but just not as honed in. Other games are complete departures (like COM) or don't quite have the balancing or gamefeel (like BBS DDD) KH3 isn't a bad game, but we want it so be so great that anything that doesn't hit right is sandpaper on a water slide.
