Educators in Florida Win Case Against State Censorship. July 7, 2026. Today, a federal court of appeals has ruled unconstitutional the higher education provisions of a classroom censorship law that unfairly restricted an educators’ ability to teach about concepts like race, gender and more, commonly known as the Florida Stop W.O.K.E. Act.
Even if HB5601E is framed as a procedural change, this creates a new mechanism for state-level curricular intervention. Help defend academic freedom.
This provision (re: HB5601E) changes the state’s role from reviewing institutional general education decisions to potentially altering them directly. Contact legislators ASAP at the link in the caption; the vote is expected to take place TOMORROW.

Our colleagues at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Jamaica, are facing a crisis in the wake of Hurricane Melissa—a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane that has devastated their campus, homes, and lives. Faculty have lost everything. Students face uncertainty about shelter, food, and whether they can continue their education. Classrooms, libraries, and laboratories lie damaged or destroyed. We in Florida understand hurricanes. We know the devastation they bring and the power of solidarity in recovery. The University of the West Indies has long been a beacon of academic excellence in the Caribbean, contributing vital research in climate science, public health, Caribbean studies, and more. Now they need us.
