Slide 5: Light green background, dark green speech bubble. Title: History (in the U.S.) Text: In the 19th Century ASL was adopted into the U.S. schooling curriculum. This success was later overturned however with the rise of “oralism”: a philosophy which prioritised the teaching of speech and lip-reading while banning and punishing the use of Sign Language. This came to a head in 1880 in Milan, where Alexander Graham Bell’s eugenicist ideals dictated that the curriculum should be rid of ASL. As Nović notes, 1880-1960 is considered the dark ages of deaf education, and unfortunately “the shadow of eugenics persists in medicine and education today.”

We follow Charlie as she is finally given access to ASL, after growing up with a Cochlear implant that never took. Despite this, Charlie was forced to try her best to assimilate to the hearing world, inevitably ensuring overwhelming frustration and “scholastic failure”. Once Charlie goes to the River Valley School for the Deaf, we see her intelligence and potential flourish after getting access to visual language. We also follow her inevitable grappling with the injustice and pent up frustration that has followed her throughout her life.
