As many people are beginning to notice, the concerns, situations, and injustices the luddites were fighting seem very similar to what we face today. And it was a lot: Rampant exploitation by the ‘entrepreneurial’ classes Devaluation of skills that had taken years to acquire Spiraling costs of living vs plummeting wages Extreme concentration of wealth and resources into the hands of the few Being shut out of and removed from legitimate means to challenge their situation Deregulation and increasingly dangerous working conditions Crimalisation of any act of resistance A state that actively oppressed them with military and militia The destruction of the environment by new highly polluting factories The annihilation of their businesses, way of life, and communities Homelessness, starvation and extreme poverty Sounds depressingly familiar, doesn’t it?
