Surface topography influences TENG output via the real contact area: in this case (PVS in contact with Mica), power output is shown to decrease with increasing roughness (on the PVS) because of the corresponding decrease in real contact area shown in the optical images looking through the transparent Mica. Areal root mean square height Sq is varied from 1.5 µm (highest power peak) to 82.5 µm (lowest power peak).
