For the Pro-Registration side, it’s notable that the key leader is Iron Man, who is backed by fellow super geniuses Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and Hank Pym (Ant Man/Giant Man/Yellow Jacket). It is surprisingly prescient for Millar to showcase how technology and scientific advancement are inevitably allied with or co-opted by the government to infringe on civil liberties. It’s particularly salient to witness Tony Stark, former arms dealer and military contractor turned outsider hero, return to the government as a tech oligarch implementing the weaponry of the 21st century– not missiles and bombs but surveillance and private prisons. It makes for a slyly perceptive and subversive moment for Millar, whose work is rarely more than broad and bombastic satire. It seems almost accidental given his view of his own work where Iron Man is the hero of the story. But it gives new color to the now laughable comparisons once made between Elon Musk and Stark back when the Iron Man movie was coming out.
