Since moving to Mexico City, Ortiz has come to appreciate the city's vibrant and verdant culture, and has rejoiced in a sense of liberation. But there is also deep and intensifying pain. The sadness of what he has left behind bears down on him. He is disoriented, and racked by existential questions. Donald Trump's brutal campaign against those he calls 'illegal aliens' has made their lives so imbued by fear that leaving became the lesser evil. Trump likes to emphasize the supposed voluntary aspect of their departure by calling them 'self-deportees'. Others use a different phrase that stresses the cruelty driving such decisions: Ortiz and others like him have been 'ICEd out'. Abel Ortiz quit the US on 4 August 2025. Ortiz, who was undocumented after he was brought to the US when he was two months old, packed two bags and left. It meant saying goodbye to a thriving hair salon business, his best friend and a community he had cultivated over decade, and returning to a country that he barely knows, and a language - Spanish - that he speaks only haltingly. A video beneath the caption shows Ortiz packing his belongings and cutting a woman's hair at the salon where he worked.
