In that post I contrasted my more conventionally "game design" games with the ones that felt more like pieces of art. Back then there was a lot of talk about the relationship of games and art. A lot of us found ourselves called to be artists, in the medium of games, but we lacked a clear model of how to do that. Many of the games that had inspired us were made as products, by large teams, and trying to follow those was unhelpful. A couple of overthought and underfelt sketches by famous game-industry men were being paraded as though they were something important. Someone who mostly wrote about movies claimed that games could never be art (feeling insecure in their own medium's tenuous recognition as 'proper' art?). But there we were, doing the thing that is art and what we were making was games. We were doing it, but got confused when we tried to talk about it. Probably best talk less do more.

It seems to me that the solution isn't to admonish men at large; to go into every interaction with bad faith and your guard up, savagely waiting to be amused like Queen Victoria with a BLOK membership; to make everything about yourself. All those roads lead to narcissism masquerading as gender politics. The only solution is to opt out of the framework as much as possible. To stop running your image or your needs through the prism of how "men and women" should be, and instead do whatever you want and take people however they come. Go out into the wilderness chin up, heart open, and willing to be pleasantly surprised. Men too. Isn't that the whole point? We're here, very briefly, to eat three meals a day and fuck in the dirt and sit in one of those white plastic chairs drinking tea and trading stories formed from half-baked gossip you gathered throughout the day. The rest is a load of whatever. Don't be afraid to be a real person in a the real world, flawed and incoherent as both of those things are, and desirability will follow.

It must surely be more stimulating to the reader's senses if, instead of writing "He made a hurried meal off the Plat du Jour -excellent cottage pie and vegetables, followed by home-made trifle" (I think this is a fair English menu without burlesque) you write "Being instinctively mistrustful of all Plats du Jour, he ordered four fried eggs cooked on both sides, hot buttered toast and a large cup of black coffee." No difference in price here, but the following points should be noted: firstly, we all prefer breakfast foods to the sort of food one usually gets at luncheon and dinner; secondly, this is an independent character who knows what he wants and gets it; thirdly, four fried eggs has the sound of a real man's meal and, in our imagination, a large cup of black coffee sits well on our taste buds after the rich, buttery sound of the fried eggs and the hot buttered toast.

Now that the code of guidance has been seen, it is clear that it does not function to ensure that trans people can live their lives free from harassment and discrimination. Instead, it sets up situations where trans people will be asked to out themselves repeatedly in order to access services. I am a trans woman, and I have faced the choice of - how well am I passing today? What toilet should I use to minimise the chance I get harassed? It's a high stakes decision! And it's now higher stakes, as there's now signals from the government that it is right to question people who you think might be using facilities which don't match the gender you parse. This is not the way to a world where trans people are not harassed. The code also suggests that where a trans person cannot comfortably use either gendered facility, they should be provided alternative facilities. The cost of constructing these facilities is estimated to be £300 million - where they can be constructed at all. This government claims to prioritise economic growth, and yet is imposing huge costs on business (businesses in sectors already under a lot of strain) in order to solve... well, the practical problem is that transphobes might sometimes have to share a space with trans people. No concrete harms have been identified, there are no cases to point to of actual harms having occurred. The highest profile case about changing rooms (the Sandie Peggie case) was specifically about the harassment that a trans person was subjected to, not about harms caused by the trans person. And, in any case, it would not be affected by the EHRC ruling, as the EHRC ruling is about services provided to the public, not about conditions for employees. So, in short: the new code is both cruel and expensive. It doesn't solve any real problems. I urge you to reject it. Yours sincerely,V Buckenham

If your character has a lifelong feud with Ember and is bullied by them relentlessly in the game, it does not mean that Jan is a bully, and the conflict should not leave the confines of the in-game time. And on the contrary, if your character has a passionate romance with Ember, it does not mean that Jan has these feelings offgame.
