We were farmers
But the rich men came for our lands
Invented leases to partition
the land, to charge us rent
To make competing impossible.
“Become a craftsman”, they said.
“We will always need more craftsmen.”

So we were craftsmen
But the rich men came for our labor
Invented manufacturing
To commoditize craft, to sell more
To make competing impossible.
“Become a line worker,” they said.
“We will always need more line workers.”

So we were line workers.
But the rich men came for our labor
Invented offshoring to find
cheaper labor and cut costs
To make competing impossible.
“Become a coder,” they said.
“We will always need more coders.”

So we were coders.
But the rich men came for our code
Invented chat bots to make
Writing new software trivial
To make competing impossible.

“What do we become now?” We asked.
“Become a consumer,” they insisted.
“We will always need more consumers.”

So, we are farmers.
