Razick held up a stack of three pre-packaged meals. “Someone order breakfast?” Jeb kept his tone flat. “Depends. Who made it?” The air left his lungs with an involuntary grunt as one of the containers hit his stomach with telekinetically-enhanced force. “Lawrence did, you jerk.” But she was grinning.

Scowling, Jake crossed his arms and leaned against the public balcony outside his private room, staring at the distant mountain range. One of Janikk’s many forests stretched beneath him, carved in two by the monstrously large and currently unnamed river which Urla’s city planners had chosen as water source for the newly fledged city behind and beneath him. A sense of belonging thrummed along his soul, the network of life on Janikk recognizing and welcoming him as one of its own. It would have been beautiful, if he’d actually wanted to be here in the first place. But this was his life now, ever since he’d foolishly demanded his father save Baden instead of fleeing to a new planet like the necromancer had wanted. Beauty, and loneliness.

They emerged from the Afterlife along the northeast section of the island, atop a large glacier overlooking the eastern ice shelf. Red and orange from the dawning spring sun glinted in the dancing waves of the ocean below, casting their light in shimmers against the ice beneath the last faint slivers of Janikk’s twin moons. Pristine snow, devoid of even a hint of animal tracks, covered every surface as far as Shane could see. Not that tracks would remain visible for long. He shivered in the frigid wind whipping across the glacier, before cursing and fumbling for the environmental controls of the uniform, half-frozen fingers pawing uselessly at his pocket. He’d forgotten to turn it off, the built-in Anemancy dutifully siphoning off his body heat to the environment. “Can’t take you anywhere.” Razick shook her head, removing her glove to extend two bare fingers in his direction. “Let me through your Shielding.”
“So the creatures in his stories do mostly match the official report,” Jeb concluded. “And they’re coordinated. There’s definitely an intelligence at work.” “Janikk?” Jake’s eyes shone as he spoke. “Why did he say that’s the planet’s name?” “Said he heard the wind speak.” Jeb shrugged. “Wasn’t any language he recognized, but it kept using the same word in every sentence: Janikk. He assumed it was meant as a name.” “So… Either we’re traveling to a sentient planet who can coordinate with the wildlife,” Shane summarized, “or we’re chasing the frantic musings of a madman about a death planet.”

Shane lowered his voice to a stage whisper. “It’s his birthday today. And he’d like you to celebrate with him.” Jeb shook his head, confused, as several members of the crowd rushed to notify the restaurant of their celebrity birthday celebration. “It’s not my… Raz. Tell him it’s not my birthday.” “Free cake!” Razick grinned. “I knew you loved me!”

“Enjoy your hunt, sir.” Haveid removed their own helmet and closed their eyes, nose tilted upward to take in the cool scents of the evening, unfamiliar and yet comforting all the same. They didn’t regret their agreement with Navarch Javon, watching her back and defending her position against more threats than she’d ever realize as she rose through the ranks, but their days as a battle mage in the field had always remained a fond memory. It felt good to be back planetside for a change. The faint breeze wafting from the direction the commander had pointed carried none of the expected scents of an animal on the run. And no true predator would remain downwind of their prey for long. Decision made, Haveid set off in the opposite direction. They slipped from their boots to silently traverse the ground in bare feet, the cool earth a welcome sensation beneath their footpads after months spent on the unyielding metal of the Relentless’ decks. Time to run.
“There you are.” Vida froze at the voice, squeezing her eyes closed and twisting her hands in the sheets as she started in on the breathing exercises the ship’s counselor had taught her. Selkirk wasn’t here. It was all in her head, another hallucination summoned by her guilty conscience. “Where’s your fire, little wolf?” The hallucination laughed, the nightmare of shattered glass and broken dreams constantly echoing through Vida’s every quiet moment. “Don’t tell me I broke you already. We were just getting started.” “You’re not real,” Vida recited. “Not real. Not real. Not–” “I see.” The hallucination huffed, and suddenly Vida felt the familiar grip of Selkirk’s telekinetics wrap around her and haul her from her bunk.

Veris wiped his face against his sleeve as he pulled off the thick rubber gloves Jake’s father had given him. “Done! Finally! Now, about those magic lessons…” “You’re not done,” the necromancer answered softly, his back still to Veris as he scrubbed at a particularly stubborn stain on the large bathroom mirror. “You didn’t even look,” Veris protested. “I cleaned them exactly the way you showed me.” “If you had, you’d be done,” Shane answered, his eyes meeting Veris’ reflection in the mirror. “But you’re not. He's married to a dead (but very colorful) insectoid fae nicked "Feels" whose soul he keeps in a locket around his neck, against his chest. He's the one who killed them, but they've worked through that. Their relationship isn't physical in the slightest, Shane gets very uncomfortable even talking Feels through their insecurities about not being able to help Shane with the physical needs they have trouble accepting he doesn't have, but Feels is an empath and Shane's heart has only ever been interested in Feels', so they have a rich emotional relationship.
