The bottom right-hand corner of this book features a flickbook animation of a donkey kicking its back legs – it is, in all ways, a kickass book.
The picture shows a verdigris-covered statue of Constantine the Great, in front of York Minster (the Minster, as always, is partly hidden in scaffolding). Constantine is lounging in a claw-footed chair, leaning on his sword. He wears a short tunic, military gear and a cloak, but no helmet, and sports the ubiquitous “Roman” hairstyle – closely cropped and with the short fringe that Roland Barthes called the “sign of Roman-ness” in films. Someone has completed his look with what seem to be large self-adhesive cartoon-style eyes.
