When people think of korean food, they may picture a restaurant table: sweet, sizzling barbecue over a grill and endless small plates of side dishes of seasoned vegetables. But when I think of Korean food, I’m flooded with memories of simpler food served every day at home. 
My mother was an excellent cook. Our meals always included rice - sometimes multigrain rice with beans, Along with a soup, a stew such as doenjang jjigae or kimchi jjigae , some kind of jeon : vegetables lightly coated in flour, and egg and pan fried. And of course, there was always kimchi. (show photos)
 Occasionally, we had my favorite, bindaeteok, which is a kind of pancake made from soaked and ground mung beans, mixed with vegetables and meat and pan fried. 

Korean food, like every cuisine, was shaped by geography, climate and history. Korea is a mountainous peninsula with cold winters, humid summers, limited flat farmland, and long coastlines. Koreans cooks learned to use grains, soybeans, roots greens and sea vegetables - and to preserve through the seasons through drying, salting and fermentation. 
But to me, these foods are also history carried through a family.
