Saturday/Sunday, June 6/7 2026 - "Ssssssmart Folding" "How do you make a robot slither like a snake? Use origami! Scientists at the University of Southern Denmark turned to origami when designing a snakelike robot to move in small, narrow spaces. They wanted to re-create rectilinear locomotion, the way snakes move by shifting small muscles that connect their ribs and skin. By creating a "skin" out of laminated textiles, they were able to produce an "origami bellow" that can expand with air and retract to move like a snake does. The origami-inspired body keeps the robot lightweight and flexible. The scientists hope it will eventually be used for exploration in space and search and rescue missions!"

Origami master Akira Yoshizawa developed wet folding to give his folds a less geometric, more lifelike appearance. Dampening a heavier piece of paper makes it easier to fold curves and mold the paper to your desired shape. Use clothespins or binder clips to hold the folds in place while the paper dries and to prevent wrinkles. This technique is perfect for more realistic animal origami or anything curved!"
