In this this illustration from "Mercy," by Nancy Furstinger, Henry Bergh, the founder of the ASPCA is on a New York City street where he is blocking the way of a horse drawn street car which is overflowing with people and is too heavy for the poor horses who have to pull the trolley. The time period is the late 1800s. A light snow is falling and a young family in the foreground is watching Bergh's heroic action as he tries to save the abused horses.
