It was otherwise equivalent to the standard A3000 computer. This variant was created by Amiga to promote Commodore's adoption of some technologies from Sun Microsystems and Unix International. Like other A3000 models, the 3000UX was powered by the Motorola 68030 CPU and came standard with 2 MB of RAM." TECH SPEC TUESDAY Sony NEWS (Image: Sony NEWS UNIX workstation desktop computer.) About this machine: The Sony NEWS ("Network Engineering Workstation") was a Unix workstation first released in 1987. It was powerful, with two Motorola MC68020 processors, and ran BSD Unix version 4.2. It had performance on par with a DEC VAX-11/780. It was popular in Japan and was used in universities and research laboratories. It also had a vertical aspect ratio monitor which made it a good choice for desktop publishing. The first series of NEWS workstations sold for between $6,000 and $19,000 (between $17,700 and $56,050 today). TECH SPEC TUESDAY Victor 9000 (aka Sirius 1) (Image: Victor 9000 desktop computer with monochrome monitor, dual floppy drives, keyboard, and numeric keypad.) About this machine: Released in 1981, the Victor 9000 (called ACT Sirius 1 in Europe) was a 16-bit computer designed for business users. It supported both MS-DOS and CP/M operating systems, had high quality audio and monochrome graphics capabilities, and was a competitor of the IBM PC. It employed unique technology to allow it to fit more data on standard floppy disks, and had two built-in serial ports and two built-in parallel ports for expansion purposes. Despite not finding success in North America, it was popular in both Great Britain and Germany while the IBM PC was not available. 🔎 Throwback Thursday Palm-sized PCs: (Image of an IBM Palm Top PC 110 with its display open.) Relying on miniaturized keyboards and other components as well as docking stations, they put a full computer in the palm of your hand. Wow That's Fascinating VT100: The Terminal That Set the Standard DEC's VT100 terminal became the model for terminal emulators everywhere. Its control codes live on in software like xterm, and it defined how text terminals behave. The graphic features green monospaced text on a black background styled to resemble a classic CRT terminal. TECH SPEC TUESDAY IBM 5100 About this machine: The IBM 5100 is one of the first portable computers ever, and was released by IBM in 1975. It had a custom 16-bit processor called PALM (Program All Logic in Microcode), could support up to 64 KB of memory, and an integrated 5" CRT display and keyboard. The 5100's starting price was $8,975 (about $55,555 in 2026 money), and weighed over 50 lbs. It used magnetic tape drives with proprietary cartridges for mass storage, and connected to a dot matrix printer or IBM Selectric typewriter for output. Milestone Monday July 13th, 2004 On this day in 2004, Google acquired the popular photo management software Picasa, making it free to download shortly after. This was one of the first steps of Google's creation of a cloud-based media ecosystem. TECH SPEC TUESDAY GRiD Compass 1101 Image of the black GRiD Compass 1101 laptop with its clamshell display open. About this machine: The GRiD Compass 1101 was the first "laptop" computer with a "clamshell" design like modern laptops. It featured advanced technology including "magnetic bubble" RAM as internal storage (as well as external floppy drives), and had a built-in 6-inch monochrome display. It ran the custom GRiD OS that included a file manager, a text editor, a worksheet program, a basic database application, and GRiDBASIC for programming BASIC applications. The GRiD Compass line of laptops would become somewhat famous when later models were used onboard NASA Space Shuttle missions. Wow That's Fascinating In 1993, You Could Run Windows from a Floppy Disk Before hard drives were common, it wasn't unusual to boot into Windows from a set of floppy disks. TECH SPEC TUESDAY ICL One Per Desk About this machine: Launched in 1984 by British company, International Computers Limited (ICL), the "One Per Desk" was based on the Sinclair QL and designed to run business-related software packages. ICL worked with British Telecom to develop a unique feature for the "OPD": integrated telephony modules. It had a built-in modem and telephone handset as well as a Texas Instruments TMS5220 speech synthesizer chip designed to automatically answer incoming calls. The OPD was able to connect to terminal services using the integrated modem. Wow That's Fascinating ELIZA: The First Terminal Chatbot In the 1960s, ELIZA simulated a Rogerian therapist via text prompts. It wasn't AI, but it fooled plenty of people into emotional conversations—all from a terminal window. vintage.computer
TECH SPEC TUESDAY BeBox About this machine: Designed with software developers, the BeBox from Be Inc. ran the "BeOS" operating system. The system was powerful, with two PowerPC 603 processors, had 8-slots for RAM SIMMS for up to 256 MB, and had a custom, proprietary "GeekPort" which gave users access to the ISA bus. It even had "blinkenlights" on the front panel that reflected the current CPU load. The dual-CPU workstations had many unique features, from its operating system to its architecture, but unfortunately did not find great commercial success.
