It was probably a bad idea for the media to burn any and all goodwill in favor of putting its thumb in the scale for Donald Trump. Like. This is a rational reaction to national media openly doing regime agitprop
Basic media literacy is goddamn shot rn. People can’t even be bothered to look at sources for information. It’s wild. Average American just raw dogging sewage into the brain on the regular thinking they bought a filet mignon from Whole Foods.
We need to solve the problem of every news story being behind a different paywall. When I was a kid yesterday's newspaper was everywhere. Today, yesterday's news remains behind a paywall.
Please address the current downward trend in public trust of journalist institutions. Or maybe tell people to support independent journalism instead. I think it might be a good thing if corporate journalism dies and never comes back.
Major news media only have themselves to blame. One of the wonders of early Twitter was direct access to eyewitnesses on the ground and experts in topics in the news. The mainstream journalists would show up a day or two later and clearly be out of their depth.

This hits differently for me than it might have five years ago. Social media seems like a better entry into the vast pool of quality journalism that is out there than any corporately controlled sources. We just need a better model for rewarding the writers and reporters. Frictionless micro payments?
Given most our traditional media. this makes sense. Also, I think it is a good thing given the media takeover by the oligarchs.
So effing cooked. I'm never going to stop saying, I tried to warn people in 1991. MTVs Real World was the beginning of the end for humanity. I was 12. Why did no one else see it?
We were already "cooked" long before social media, because all the corporate networks have been framing EVERY issue from the Republican perspective and refusing to accurately cover the truly critical issues of the day (benefitting the corporations ruining the planet) for forty years.
I'm not sure this is 100% bad. I rely a lot on videos from left-leaning content creators for a lot of my news, because most of the mainstream news outlets have become pretty worthless.
The news sources have been driving us away with their bullshit. First the NYT, then the WaPo... the most important political news of the century is that the R Party is an anti-democratic authoritarian Party, but you'd never know that from political reporting.

I wonder how they measure it if the social media site is just a pass-through. That is, if you go on Bluesky and find a link to an article on, say, Wired... does their study/story credit Bluesky as the source of your news, or Wired?

I used to think this was a problem, but the more that "traditional news" declines as the billionaires who own all of it, the more I think this is at worst a "six one, half dozen the other" situation.
With today’s mainstream news sources being taken over daily by republicans and their maga bosses, it’s only going to get worse.
