Family-Owned Newspapers In South Carolina the loss of local news has led to journalistic innovation and newpartnerships at the family-owned Post and Courier in Charleston. The newspaper staffhad been investigating South Carolina sheriffs, several of whom had been indicted. An editor noticed that many of those problems of unchecked law enforcement power occurred in rural parts of the state without daily newspaper coverage-in places described by Penelope Muse Abernathy as news deserts" —or with weakened coverage upheld by small weeklies without budget to pay for basicslike public records fees and rent. Glenn Smith, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigations editor at the South Carolina daily, launched a series called "Uncovered."7 "What if we went into those areas—to news des-erts—to try to tell those stories that aren't being told," Smith recalled of the series origins.® In explaining the rationale behind "Uncovered," the newspaper website says, "At the same time, cost-cutting corporate chains and hedge funds scooped up newspapers and axed reporting staffs to squeeze out more profits.* Smith knows reporters and editors at some of those newspapers, and he provided context on an important contrast in profit targets and his ability to do work at a family-owned newspaper company compared to theirs: "For my peers in corporate chains, it's more about hitting that mark. If that means bodies go out the door, bodies go out the door. Any company needs to make profit, but at a family-owned paper there is that sense of family. It pains them to do layoffs. They also have this deep sense of community mission. They know that cutting staff is going to harm coverage. You do it as a last resort. They were willing to share in that financial loss to make sure the paper does not suffer" Smith started

At some point, this death by 1,000 cuts has to stop. Support your local newspapers, people. Get a digital subscription. This is genuinely what we are up against?" Her Friday tweet, which would go viral, also led to her Monday fring. McClatchy executives told Lords she was fired over misuse of the company's social media policy. She had spent the weekend refreshing her knowledge of the handbook, nervous about corporate retaliation, but she failed to find her misstep articulated in the document. She ultimately deleted the tweet after a McClatchy executive said she had to. After McClatchy fired Lords, the unionized newsroom at the Statesman wrote a letter to Tony Hunter, McClatchy CEO, and to Kristin Roberts, then chief content officer, in Lords's defense. The Idaho News Guild wrote, , "To fire an editor for advocating for resources and encouraging people to subscribe is a remarkably disappointing decision by McClatchy management. Their favorite Marx quote is the oft-repeated maxim "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." Since the Enlightenment, it's been assumed that as people gain more rational knowledge over time, they will have less need for "superstitious" beliefs and will thus abandon religious belief and practice. That's the great claim of secularization, one that online atheists convey when they suggest that people with even a little bit of education should be able to see through religion's thin veneer and know it for what it actually is—a way to keep people happy in their subjugation. 100 The Great Reversal However, in the United States today the people who are the most likely to be religiourare precisely the educated those with undergraduate or graduate degrees. Those with high school diplomas or less are the least likely to claim any religious affiliation (see fig. 6.). The Cooperative Election Study has been fielded every year since 2008. Its real benefit is its sample size. When all its surveys are pooled together, nearly 632,000 individuals are included. This means the average poll includes nearly forty thousand respondents. I calculated the share of people who identified as atheist, agnos-tic, or nothing in particular over the last sixteen survey waves, but I broke it down into six levels of education ranging from not completing high school to having a graduate degree. The data is overwhelmingly clear: The people with the least amount of education are the most likely to identify with no religious tradition, while those with graduate degrees are the least likely to identify as nones. According to James Hudnut-Beumler's data analysis, in the late 1950s, more than half of all Americans were associated with mainline churches. When the General Social Survey began asking questions of Americans in the carly 1970s, about 30 percent of respondents aligned with mainline denominations like the United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, or the Episcopal Church. That figure stayed relatively high through the 1970s and into the early 1980s. But as we sce in figure 3.1, the next eight years would signal/a stunning declineffor the mainline. In 1982, 29 percent of Americans were mainline Protestant. Less than a decade later, that share had dropped a full ten percentage points. The mainline lost a third of its members during the Reagan years. Recall from the previous chapter that this was also the time when evangelical affiliation surged in the United States, rising about six percentage points during this span. Religious demography is a zero-sum game——if one group gets larger, another group has to get smaller. This was likely the case in the 1980s: 36 Mainline Protestants Asthe Christian richt began to surge in power and prominence, many mainline Protestants defected to the evangelical tradition. What follows this period of rapid decline is several decades of slow and steady drops. By the carly 2000s, about 17 percent of Americans were mainline Protestant. But in subsequent surveys, that number dropped a percentage point or two each year. On its own, a decline of 1 percent is nothing to worry about and could be nothing more than statistical noise. But when those drops persist over the course of a decade, they signal something much more problematic. By 2016, the mainline had declined to 10 percent, and it hung around there for the next few years. In …
the share of mainline Protestants between 1975 and 1988 and the subsequent rise of evangelicals between 1983 and 1993 are statistical backdrops for what may be the most substantial long-term development in American religiosity. The 1990s became an inflection point for American religion that may never happen again. Between 1991 and 1998, the religious composition of young adults underwent a tectonic shift. When the survey sample is isolated to just those between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five, a portrait emerges of a generation in religious flux. Tracing the religious composition of young adults between 1972 and 1991, we see an unremarkable trend line (see fig. 7.3). In 1972, about 86 percent of this age cohort aligned with some type of Christian group. For the next twenty years, that number never went higher than 87.5 percent and never went lower than 82 percent. Things were about as steady as it gets when it comes to polling data about religion. For almost every year during this stretch. the chane of young people who reported no religious affiliation was 11 percent. Some years it dropped to 9 percent, and other years it was as high as 13 percent. But looking at the long-term trend, we see that the relizious composition of young adults was substantively the same in 1991 as it was in 1972. However, the share of young adults who said that they were Christians dropped incredibly quickly and consistently between 1991 and 1998. In 1991, 87 percent was Christians. Five years later, the number was down to 74 percent, and it continued to decrease through 1998, when it ended up at 73 percent. It stayed at that number for the next eight years or so before slowly beginning to decrease again. During this same time frame, the share …

If one traces the political composition of the nonreligious since 1972. however, the story is one of tremendous stasis. In 1972, about 57 percent of nones said that they were Democrats, while about 20 percent were Republicans and the remaining 23 percent were politically independent. The share of Democrats never went below 49 percent in the following fifty years. It also never rose above 57 percent. The lingts remarkably stable given the dramatic increase in the number of nones. Consider this: The share of Democrats in 1972 was 57 percent. It was 55 percent five decades later. The Republican share went from 25 to 19 percent, while the portion of independents shifted from 25 to 27 percent. In other words, the overall political breakdown of the nonreligious today is nearly the same as it was back in 1972, even as the group was more than five times larger in the most recent GSS survey. How is this possible? It's not likely due to a strong communication network that can transmit messages among the tens of millions of nonreligious Americans. Christians have always had 80 The Nones denominational networks and parachurch ministries to encour age adherents to stake out political and cultural positions. While there's no doubt that the Protestant landscape, especially the evangelical one, is more fragmented today than it has ever been, here is still a semblance of institutional structure. By contrast. most nonreligious people have no connection to or knowledge of groups like the Freedom from Religion Foundation and the American Atheists. Recall, also, that the biggest portion of nones are "nothing in particular," making up at least 60 percent of all nones in the United States.
