My first thought was that the website/project had been exploited somehow?

This piqued my curiosity... so I looked up the project and found the sponsor page on Open Collective. Nothing unusual for an OSS project, you can buy a bronze sponsorship for $50/month and that will earn you a "spot" on their website. opencollective.com/date-fns
