McCain's distaste for President Barack Obama's health care law was no secret. While he agreed that the health care system was broken, he did not think more government involvement would fix it. Like most Republicans, he campaigned in his last Senate race on a promise to repeal and replace the law with something better. After Republicans spent months bickering amongst themselves about what was better, McCain was disappointed in the option presented to senators hours before their vote: hobble the ACA and trust that a handful of lawmakers would be able to craft an alternative behind closed doors, despite failing to accomplish that very thing after years of trying. What bothered McCain more, though, was his party's strategy to pass their so-called skinny repeal measure, skipping committee consideration and delivering it straight to the floor. They also rejected any input from the opposing party, a tactic for which he had slammed Democrats when the ACA passed in 2010 without a single GOP vote. He lamented that Republican leaders had cast aside compromise-nurturing Senate procedures in pursuit of political victory. In his 2018 memoirs, "The Restless Wave," McCain said even Obama called to express gratitude for McCain's vote against the Republican repeal bill. "I was thanked for my vote by Democratic friends more profusely than I should have been for helping save Obamacare," McCain wrote. "That had not been my goal."

For the book, authors Jonathan Allen and Ami Parnes spoke to numerous Harris insiders about their efforts to get the candidate on his podcast. Those insiders describe a frustrating experience that included creating a campaign stop in Houston with Beyonce on Oct. 25 just to put Harris in proximity to Austin for a potential appearance on Rogan, only to then be told by the podcaster’s team that the date “was blocked out as a personal day” — which later turned out to be the same day Rogan interviewed Donald Trump.

From the New York Times (11/11/09): Hannity to Address Protest Video Questions BY BILL CARTER NOVEMBER 11, 2009 1:30 PM November 11, 2009 1:30 pm “The Daily Show,” which has become one of the media’s prime monitors when it comes to calling out misuse or manipulation of video, caught the Fox News Channel and one of its hosts, Sean Hannity, Tuesday night, in what appeared to be a blatant example of doctoring a report with inappropriate video to enhance an argument. Jon Stewart, the host of “The Daily Show,” presented excerpts from a segment of Mr. Hannity’s show in which he discussed the so-called tea party protests in Congress last Thursday with Representative Michele Bachmann, a Republican from Minnesota who had urged supporters to turn up at the Capitol to protest the health care bill. [highlighted] Beyond questioning the crowd estimates cited by Mr. Hannity, Mr. Stewart demonstrated that the Fox News program had included several scenes of the crowd, one of which he conclusively proved had not been shot the day of the health care protest but at the much larger tea party protest in Washington last summer. Fox News would not comment on the use of the video Wednesday beyond having a spokeswoman say: “Sean will address this on his show tonight.” Among the ways Mr. Stewart was able to show the events were separate was shots of trees that were still green with leaves and the obvious difference in the color of the sky. He also matched the exact video Mr. Hannity had used to video from the summer event.
