Lewis Mumford, one of the great historians of cities, expressed a similar idea: "The city is a theater of social action." That line gets at something the photograph conveys well. The skyline isn't impressive merely because it's tall; it's impressive because it is the physical expression of millions of human lives intersecting every day.
