Severe heat stress in cows begins at a Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) of 90–99°F (32–37°C), a threshold repeatedly surpassed during California summers. Animals experiencing heat stress may exhibit increased respiratory rate, open-mouth panting, excessive drooling, and decreased feed intake. They may also display aggression as they compete for access to shaded areas or water.

While the number of milk-producing farms has been declining since 1971, the size of the farms continues to grow. Canada has no legal requirement for dairy cows to be allowed outside, and as farms consolidate and grow in size, an unfortunate change for dairy cows in Canada is that, more often than not, cows are often kept indoors year-round. Cows are typically artificially inseminated and their calves are taken from them within the first hours of their lives so that their mothers can enter the milking system.
