Debuting in 1996, it was a result of Microsoft’s scrapped WinPad project & would influence the future Windows Mobile/Phone OSes. Support for the last version - Windows Embedded Compact 2013 - ended on 10th October 2023.

What's really interesting, MS also had builds of Windows NT 3.1 for RISC processors (MIPS and Alpha, both 64 bit!) too before they introduced CE.
