Sybil was enrapturing at the best of times. She had a toothy smile, yellowed from years of tea-drinking, and big, wide eyes that saw everything, and that occasionally took in absolutely nothing, distractable as she was. Her mood could swing unpredictably, and her memory faltered more often than not, but she was never cruel, and never dishonest. Jasper found her pretty when they were young, and beautiful now, where age had deepened her understanding of the world and slowed her down somewhat. He also, with some hesitance, had to admit: even in sickness, and even in pain, Sybil was quite charming. She lay on the couch, teary-eyed, a hand dangling off the side and wiggling at nothing in particular. Strands of damp hair clung to her face, covering furrowed brows and a worrying lip. If there was anything powerful enough to incapacitate someone like Sybil, it was the ever-dreadful perimenopausal migraine, and she lay in its throes, shirt riding up to expose the stretch marks striping her stomach and disappearing beneath the waist of her shorts. Jasper had already wrung the loose water from the washcloth in his hands, but he still feared hed grip the damned thing tight enough to get the carpet wet. Maybe her condition justified his desire to spend every waking moment hovering over her, he thought. Or maybe he was just sick himself, sick by manner of spirit, standing here as if he could drink up Sybil's malaise like wine. He tried to will the thought away but something still stirred in him when he knelt down, brushing greasy curls away from her forehead to replace the cloth. She mumbled something in appreciation, followed by a soft groan. She was too tired for the theatrics that often accompanied mild upset or illness: this was Sybil as genuine and unfiltered as she came, and his stomach tightened with want. He didnt know what he wanted. He wanted to keep looking at her, tired and in pain, taking her visage in, but it felt sickening to allow the thought to stay with him.
