"You let her win." "What makes you say that?" "You changed cards. Why? What merit is there to a hollow victory?" Calco let out a sigh. "Andesine has lived a harsher life than near anyone I've met. You know this. I can't be there for her, since I only make it worse. But I'll not deprive her of any amount of joy, even if it comes from a place so simple as a card game. She needs this. You call her victory hollow, but I would say she has more than earned it through the sorrow that brought her here." "How strange...for a man so devoted to distancing himself from the notion of being their father, you play the part remarkably well." And to those words, Calco said naught.
Calco Geminus was a man of many secrets, despite or perhaps because of his status as a legendary adventurer. But one that so few knew, though he made little proper effort to hide it, was his mastery of Triple Triad: A game his adoptive father had taught him long ago. As a favor to Godbert, he had agreed to act as the final opponent for the tournament's winner to overcome. Seeing who this champion was to be, he could not have been happier with the outcome. It didn't even matter to him if he lost. "The whole world's watching...but don't pay them any mind," he said. "Focus on yourself. Where you stand, and why you're here. Because if you're ready..." "Let's dance," Andesine finished.
Her hunch was right: There was a final opponent not officially registered to the tournament. But their identity, she never would have imagined. From the audience, a loud cry of "You've gotta be kidding me!" rang out, no doubt coming from her brother. "I had a feeling I'd see you here. As soon as I heard you were competing." Calco said to her, his expression unreadable. "Those are my father's cards, aren't they? You use them well." Andesine was silent, unsure of what to say. Her complicated relationship with the man before her was not something she planned to address on this of all days. And he seemed to realize this. "You don't have to speak if you don't want to. Talk isn't why we're standing here, after all..."
The matches went by almost in a blur. Some were close, others closer, but Andesine suffered not a single defeat. Her deck, carefully curated from her grandfather's collection, gifted to her not long ago, was more than a match for any new cards or strategies that were thrown her way. The vast array of opponents was staggering. It was not only from Eorzea that they came to compete, even some as far as Hingashi or Alexandria, all to enjoy the splendor of the Gold Saucer. Andesine thought she even recognized an Arcadion fighter from the man's booming voice alone, his friend assuring the girl afterwards that his great anger toward losing was just part of an act. Well, mostly. And before long, only one bout awaited her...
For the end of its latest Make it Rain campaign, the gold Saucer prepared (in their own words) a spectacle like no other: A tournament of the realm's most beloved card game, where the greatest players from all nations would join together to compete for the title of Lord (or Lady) of Triple Triad. Andesine examined the ranking board with a furrowed brow. She had placed well enough in the preliminary matches to compete, but something didn't sit quite right. Noticing, her twin asked simply what the problem was. "I have a feeling there's one more piece to this competition that we haven't yet been told," she said. "A heavily promoted tournament that ends on a bout between two competitors that none of the audience has likely heard of...that isn't enough of a spectacle. Which can mean one of two things." Kyanite nodded. "I gotcha. Either the whole thing is rigged..." "...or there sits in waiting a secret, final opponent before the champion can truly claim their title."
