Something like this basically, it's a thick layer of plastic and has a loose weight in the head (usually a bunch of bb's) so when you smack something it won't dent the surface as much AND it transfers the force so it's great for un-nailing things.

If you can't reach it from below because it's too tall then a pry bar might be easier from the inside/top of the stairs to wiggle the top part off. Get the bottom edge loose FIRST, so you don't drop the board on your face when taking things apart!
