Snowy day
[Redacted] had a dirty diaper. I went over to the changing station to start getting it ready, he went to the bathroom to pick up one of the bath toys (So we were just about 6 or 8 ft apart) He looked at me and made a noise and did the sign for diaper change, with sort of a questioning tone. I said " yes! That's right! We're going to change your diaper" He said "No." Very calmly and shut the door on me.

A few months ago I voiced my enthusiasm for how AI helps me in various ways, and I was surprised that several close friends who work in coding and software development fields were vehemently against it. One of the main arguments about using AI in research is its biases – which are undeniable, but humans have those too. AI is a tool, not a guide – and it's made critical thinking even more noticeably important. So with that main caveat out of the way, here's what the researchers did.

Also, Christmas Happened I worked on Christmas, which wasn’t as bad as it might have been. Here are the highlights: Drew the prime slot for Krampus watch, 10pm to 12am. Krampuses never show up before 1am, so I didn’t have to do anything but sit on my butt and drink hot chocolate for two hours. The guy with bees for blood was discharged and he left all the staff little jars of honey. That was sweet of him. Er, no pun intended.

Oh, Right So you’ve probably noticed that the world wasn’t destroyed by a tidal wave of ice the other day. Dr Varma finally convinced me to take a break from studying and help prevent the apocalypse because she claimed she could pull some strings and make sure the clinical rotations aren’t in East next semester. A bunch of us ended up storming the Ecumenical Interfaith Worship and Meditation Center where Dr Hansen and his supporters were holed up. He had this massive device set up on the altar with all these liquid nitrogen tanks feeding into it. There was also this elaborate wooden chest carved with ice motifs.
Semester's Over! It’s done! The semester is finally over! At long last I’m finally free. Somehow I passed my finals and all my work is turned in. Now I have six beautiful weeks of freedom in which I can… pick up more shifts at the hospital so I can make rent and pay for the spring semester. Goddamn it.

Sanctum Sanctorum I finally found somewhere I can study at the hospital. If you go to North 2, there’s this mini closet next to a staff room. I guess it was intended to store spare seat cushions for all the couches in the wing. No one uses it though, so you can crawl on top of the cushions and have this cozy little space. It’s just big enough for one person with a drink and a text book. It’s great for the time between split shifts spent hunting for that one guy’s arm. The only problem is that lately there’s been all this chanting coming from the staff room next door. If I bang on the wall they usually stop for a while.

Seriously Guys, I Need to Study Dr Hansen called me into his office today. I was a little cautious because I remember what happened last time I had a private meeting with a physician. He was kind of a mess. His tie was all messed up, he hadn’t shaved, and his lab coat was all grimy. He was going through one of those unlabeled glass liquor bottles that rich people keep behind their desks like it was a diet soda. I’m going to be completely honest, I had stack of flashcards that I was surreptitiously reviewing for most of the conversation, so I didn’t catch everything he said.
Up in Arms The administration are really adamant that we catch the thing that used to be that guy’s arm. They are making everyone do double shifts until it’s found. The only doctor who seems to care about it though is Dr Petrescu, who has offered “a purse full of golden shekels” to whoever “brings [him] the hand of the beast.”

Armed to the Teeth I had found some quiet time to study last night when the bed alarm on the guy with the messed up arm started going off. He’s a fall risk and since he had been trying to get out of bed without assistance, we’ve had to put a bed alarm on as well as an extremity restraint on the right arm. When I got into the room, I saw he was struggling against the restraint and his arm had apparently grown three extra fingers. His knuckles had these two round growths on them which opened and blinked at me. At that point I called a code. Not exactly the right procedure, but I wasn’t sure what else to do. We don’t have a wall button for when someone’s arm starts flipping out and trying to escape.
Forearmed is Forewarned The patient with the crazy arm is getting worse. It’s developing all these boils and putting out this nasty smelling orange drainage. The physicians are thinking he’s either having a bad reaction to the antibiotics or that his body is rejecting the arm or the arm is rejecting the body. Dr Luchenko is adamant that it is a reaction to the antibiotics and that we should stop talking about the possibility of unlicensed experimental surgery being conducted at this very hospital and would everyone just please move on already?

Arms and the Man A patient came up from the ER tonight with a massively swollen right arm. It was all purple and veiny and the finger nails were all pointy and jagged. The skin was dry and cracked in spots, almost scaly.
