Our assessments use quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) to estimate the health benefits of new medicines. The QALY combines both the length of life gained from a treatment and its impact on quality of life compared with current treatment. We currently assess value for money for the NHS by applying a cost-effectiveness range of £20,000 to £30,000 per QALY gained. (we use a much higher threshold for medicines that treat ultra-rare conditions). This means that for a medicine to be considered cost effective, it should typically generate 1 additional year of perfect health (or an equivalent combination of additional life expectancy and health-related quality of life improvements) for no more than £20,000-£30,000 over the cost of current care. It has now been agreed that NICE will apply new thresholds of £25,000 to £35,000/QALY as soon as NICE has the power to do so, following a change in regulations. FRS (Fast Role Swap) that immediately swaps between “power provider” and “power consumer” As mentioned in a previous session, Fast Role Swap (FRS) capability is a technology that is expected to greatly change the power supply by using USB. It allows the relationship between Source and Sink to be switched in a short period of time. Suppose, for example, a laptop PC being powered by a USB hub with an AC adapter, as shown in Figure 2. If the USB hub loses AC adapter in this state, the laptop can continue operating using the battery inside PC, but the hub itself will stop operating. At that time, If PC are communicating with another device via the hub, that communication will be incomplete. FRS is a mechanism that exchanges the roles of source and sink in a short period of time (within 150 μsec) and keeps the communication via the USB hub.
PPS (Programmable Power Supply) is an optional feature of USB-PD that allows source to change the voltage (in 20mV steps) and current (in 50mA steps) in the range from 5V to 21V. If a Sink is connected to a PPS capable Source, it can request the Source to change voltage and current with small steps. As a result, the AC adapter can output the charging pattern with the voltage and current waveforms as shown in Figure 3, reducing heating and conversion loss.

Climate change Sir, Since I began studying extreme weather and the atmosphere in the 1970s, I have watched the theory of climate change become reality ("Britain shows true grit in heatwave", Jun 23). The evidence is no longer confined to academic journals: we are all feeling the impact in the stifling heat affecting our homes, schools, hospitals and workplaces this week. The science on this is clear: until we reach net zero emissions, climate change will continue to fuel ever more severe extreme weather and costly climate impacts. Despite that, the discourse around net zero is increasingly decoupled from that science and our changing weather. While it is right to debate costs and implementation, public and political discussion increasingly overlooks the fundamental "why". Net zero is not an arbitrary slogan, rather it is dictated by the laws of physics. To halt warming, net greenhouse gas emissions must stop. Pretending we can safely slow the transition ignores the certainty of escalating climate costs, which will fall most heavily on vulnerable, lower-income households.
