The US Supreme Court made it more difficult to challenge discriminatory voting laws in court by rewriting the law that applies to lawsuits under Section 2* of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. *Section 2 is a nationwide provision prohibiting voting practices that deny or abridge the right to vote based on race, color, or language minority status.
On June 25, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Shelby County v. Holder significantly undermined the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by striking down the preclearance formula. This ruling eliminated the federal approval process for changes to voting policies aimed at preventing racial discrimination. Texas immediately implemented a strict voter ID law, leading to a surge of restrictive voting measures.
Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization determined the Constitution does not protect the right to an abortion. The Supreme Court upheld Mississippi's Gestational Age Act, banning most abortions after 15 weeks, and overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Chief Justice Roberts concurred with upholding the law but criticized the decision to overrule previous cases. Justices Breyer, Kagan, and Sotomayor dissented, arguing the ruling undermined nearly five decades of legal precedent and women's constitutional rights.
In anticipation of the 1970 expiration of the Voting Rights Act's special provisions, Congress held hearings on potential amendments and reauthorization. Although progress had been made regarding voting discrimination since the 1965 Voting Rights Act, Congress extended the special provisions. Additionally, new provisions included regulations for presidential elections and voting rights for citizens aged 18 and older.

"Summer is here," said the Program Director. "We can't start anything until September." This is a typical attitude; and because it is, activities during the summer usually slump tremendously. Not only is there no need for this slump, but it is positively abortive, because the summer gives opportunity for a type of activity largely neglected by the YCLA — even though some of the most successful youth movements in the world are based upon this type of activity. Nature always did and always will carry a tremendous appeal for youth. An alert and progressive movement can use this appeal to great advantage — if it only will. There is probably no better place or time for sealing friendships and making new contacts than on a boat ride, swim party, hike — and, by the same token, no better place or time for spreading the YCLA and for consolidating the organization of the YCLA, through firmer bonds of friendship. The entire German Youth Movement, among the largest and most successful in the world, is based almost entirely upon this Nature appeal, and consequent friendships and organizations. But this growth of friendship and organization is not all. There is no necessity for stopping regular winter educational and dramatic activity with the advent of summer. As a matter of fact, if we observe other organizations similar to our own, we find outdoor discussions fully as successful as indoor winter education — the L. I. D. and Socialist Party summer conferences, for example, or the Round Table at Williamstown, or even the very successful Chatauqua type of summer education.

They held hands and faced the detention camp that had separated them for more than six months. “Nobody deserves what’s happened to them and what’s continuing to happen inside of Alligator Alcatraz,” Arianne said. “And if the government and DeSantis can be proud of having an operation like that, then I should be proud of all of my efforts to get it shut down.”
