Early on the list is almost entirely classical: Homer and Virgil lead, followed by Cicero, Horace, Seneca, Plato, Ovid, Euripides, Petrarch and Chaucer. Over the two centuries the English canon climbs in: John Milton rises from outside the top ten to first place, Shakespeare moves into the top four, and Dryden, Pope and Chaucer push up, while Seneca, Plato, Euripides, Quintilian and Petrarch drop out.
