Findlay’s record shows her values are very different from most British Columbians. When her husband, BC Conservative MLA Brent Chapman, published posts calling Palestinians “little inbred walking talking breathing time bombs” and writing that Canadians “cannot live with” Islam, Findlay refused to meet with the Muslim community and declined to publicly condemn the statements. More recently, Findlay refused to denounce one of her endorsers, former BC Conservative MLA Tara Armstrong’s Nazi rhetoric in the legislature, and has said there is a path back to the party for both Armstrong and OneBC founder Dallas Brodie, who is facing a recall campaign. When it comes to Indigenous relations, Findlay has stated she does not believe the residential school system constituted genocide, contradicting the unanimous Parliamentary vote she was part of as the Federal Conservative Party’s Chief Whip in 2022.
I would be surprised if the the letter writers and journalists don’t know that the social media companies already know more about their users than they know about themselves. Every keystroke, every choice the user makes, is recorded and logged. A personal algorithm is then created and feeds the user what they like. The user is locked into an echo chamber from which they don’t really want to leave. The social media companies are very knowledgeable about human behaviour, especially addictive behaviour, and they use it to increase engagement and increase engagement. Increased advertising equals increased profits. We all know that if the media companies put morals and ethics before profit we would not be here. So please save your indignation for the social media companies rather than the government who are trying to provide at least a measure of protection for our impressionable children.

(surname), I am writing to urge you to reject any legislative proposals, including youth social media bans and restrictions on AI systems, that would require online services to implement mandatory age verification or age assurance measures. Mr. Kinew’s comments made on Saturday, April 25 to his fellow New Democrats did not elaborate on specific details of the plans for the Government of Manitoba to move towards banning children from using social media accounts and artificial chatbots – however, I fear based on current trends that such enforcement would necessitate the use of age verification or age assurance technologies to implement access control to internet services like social media platforms. Although I share the concerns of Mr. Kinew and many others about the negative effectives that exposure to harmful online content has on children – and truly, all users regardless of age – any implementation without careful consideration pose unacceptable risks to Manitobans’ rights to privacy and data security.
