Sayan walked for two more days more before falling to the frozen ground in a stand of stone birch trees. Rockfoil from the short summer covered the earth in a crumbling chaff that rolled in waves with the wind. He noted how it swirled in a cavity formed by a group of stones. There was no color. The world was gray. When he slept, he dreamed of his sister waggling a frog at him. He hated frogs, but he was happy in the dream because Vesta had come to collect him. Despite the frog, he followed her, hoping with each hill they crested to see his mother and father. The dream ended and the cold was gone. He lay near a fire. It crackled and popped and for a time it was the only thing he could register. His mind was sluggish and muddy. He was in a cave or maybe a longhouse. Not outside. He was very warm, though the fire was at the other side of the cave. There were furs beneath him, and his own cloak and his mother's still around him, but the heat he felt was from fever. The deep soreness in his eyes and testicles were evidence to the fact.
