His blood tastes different. Once the thought occurs to Lucy, it refuses to leave the forefront of her mind. That moment is a fast flash of emotion more than sequential action, but within the panic and anger is a recollection of taste. She'd known what her own blood tasted like - an errant cracked lip, a too-bitten cuticle, and Chet's accidental punch to the face during combat training had taught her that much - but the Ghoul's was different. More metallic. Now, she can't seem to get rid of the taste of Cooper's sweeter, thinner blood, so very much like her own. It lingers on her tongue, stronger than morning coffee and somehow sweeter than the chocolate icing on the cafeteria's chocolate cake. The taste makes her remember the looks on his face, both times she's sampled it. Fascination the first time, and something like victory the next as his eyes dipped down to watch her lick her lips and taste him.
A year ago, Laura had dreaded seeing the Sheriff of North Kill walk by her cell every day. Now, she's actively looking forward to his simple texts - here - just as he pulls into the driveway. It's amazing how two weeks of brief visits and bare bones text excuses can help to steady shaky ground between two people. Her dad texts and calls when he can, but the time zone difference between California and France is tricky with their schedules, and he's got his hands full with her half siblings, all just a little older than the children she's caring for. He would jump on a plane in a heartbeat if she truly needed him though, and the long distance support is appreciated. At first, Laura worried Travis was trying to fill some paternalistic role for her. She's done her best to not draw attention to the lack of hands on family support - that's basically a lifelong habit at this point - but she knows it's obvious.
