Izoma snorted. "I don't doubt she thinks she means well. But I know rot when I smell it."
"I can respect that." Coteries were more like businesses, then? Or family units? ... family businesses? Complete with neighborly politics and small-time power bids, too complicated for a dream.
But that's all it is. I scraped the last bit of juicy meat off a bone with teeth that were a little too long and sharp. Just a dream.

A second sugar packet went into my brew, and I tore open a third while throwing Heck a dubious look.
"I'm serious," he said. "Give it a shot. Your brain's trying to work something out. And— oh come on, that's enough sugar."

"Yeah, but..." Heck ran a hand down his face as packet number five went in. "Jesus, Maura, that coffee had a family."

"You spent over fifty dollars at someplace called Bruja Burger?"
"Not all at once. They've got good burgers. And they have a live band every other Wednesday."

The woodshaper harpy visibly flinched and looked up, frozen with one hatchling pinned under a wing and the other hatchling slipping out of reach to tumble right into the (still unlit, fortunately) makeshift hearth. "Oh— I didn't see you— Suna, get out of there— I'm sorry again about earlier—"
I stopped her with a hand up and a warm chuckle. "No need. You've clearly got your hands full with these two. Come on, there's plenty room at the oldmother's hearth with me. I could carry your things if you need to grab the little ones."
She blinked, her mouth opening and shutting a few times before she could stammer out a response. "Y-yes, I... thank you."
"I'm Maura."
She flashed me a small, shy smile as I picked up her little platter of food. "...Rafa."

Rude. I was literally just inside the entrance. My tailfeathers hadn't even cleared the drape.
"Oh, Maura? She had a bit of a mishap yesterday and needed a rest, that's all," Izoma was telling them, in a breezy dismissive tone. "She's been such good help, though, don't you go scaring her off."

"My—" A coterie was like a group or a gang, right? I gave that a firm maybe; context was not my friend right now. "I don't really have one."
Izoma paused again, her head tilted and brows furrowed in concern. "Oh my, I should have guessed. So many are coming from the downriver groves lately. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be insensitive."
So this dream came with jargon and lore, why not. "Don't worry about it. I don't."
"If you say so. They say Blue Marsh is completely unlivable now. What a shame. They used to have the best snail-roe I've ever tasted— once cost me twenty drops to have just one little jug delivered this far, and that was ages ago..."

I gambled on going towards the sun as it peeked here and there through the canopy far above. The Girl Scouts had been a non-starter for me as a kid— on account of me stealing random badges off other girls' sashes— but I at least knew that if it was still morning-ish then the sun had to be east-ish.

"SHIT—!!" Entirely without my permission, my body sprang to the top of a root-arch, six feet off the ground.
The spider was rearing up to wave its hairy front legs at me. I scowled, feeling every feather on my body standing on end, and dug claws into the bark where I clung.
"You," I informed the eight-legged horror, "can fuck right off."

Being early had netted me one more advantage in the form of being first at the coffeemaker. One of the guys had taken to brewing some godawful niche gimmick beans ordered off a trendy internet personality, a sin that would not go unanswered once I found out who. This was Portland. There was a loft cafe selling fresh bags of perfectly lovely medium roast literally across the damn street.

"Okay, hey, lookit me!" I could make funny faces, babies liked that, right? In lieu of jingling keys I plucked a fern frond from the ground and flitted it at their noses. The one on the right thought this was comedy of the highest order, shrieking with laughter and falling over. The one on the left tried to eat the fern. Mixed results, but I'd played for worse audiences.

Norami's hesitation vanished and she dug into a satchel that hung off her hip, flashing me a grin. "It's steamed wyvern and pollnut stuffed buns this evening. Careful, traveler, Izoma likes them spicy."
If she thought that was a deterrent- "So do I, actually."
There was a snort from behind. Another harpy, parakeet yellow and green, smiled broadly and hopped closer. "Norami, that's not a challenge. Give her one of the regular ones, I know you make them too."
"She's going to eat it cold no matter what it tastes like," Norami retorted, making the trade with Izoma, "if she doesn't get the fire going."

I stood, and out of nowhere this freakish bird body gave itself a quick shake. Feathers puffed out down my back, the mane rustled about my ears and neck, and the wings flared and stretched and kicked up bits of leaf-litter with the air caught underneath. It was like a sneeze or a yawn, full-body and completely involuntary, and done as quickly as it had come over me.
Feathers abruptly flattening, I snapped the wings closed against myself and froze. I'd just shaken myself like a dog.

I found Heck at the walkie-talkie charging station, puttering with buttons as he consulted a yellowing owner's manual. "Sorry," I said. "I slept through all my alarms."

"Yeah, guess we'll have to communicate across the floor by Pony Express?"
Heck snorted. "I'm considering carrier pigeons."

Dinner was something from a corner store that purported to be bacon, egg, and cheese on an English muffin but whose packaging had grossly overestimated its status as food. I managed half of it before the thought of taking one more tasteless, stale bite made me chuck it in the next trash can I passed.

"You cured the sap!" It was Hazi, in no more
pleasant a mood, squawking as she came down out of the tree and charged at Turquose-feathers. "It's solid amber at the join! Why would you do that?"
Turquoise shrank in on herself. "I-I'm sorry-"
"Ttssch, really?" The first harpy, who'd been about to hand something to Turquoise, pulled back. "That branch is going to die in a season, now. We'll have to move Hazi's nest before the monsoons begin."
"And there's thorns!" Hazi wailed, pacing with her shoulder-feathers at full fluff. "Thorns, what kind of woodshaper sings up thorns?!"

brush brought me up short. I let out my breath and froze. There were animal noises— hooting, chirping, an occasional rumble-- all around, but this was close. I couldn't tell how close, or see any difference in the movement of the leaves. The rustling stopped, and I
squinted into the swiftly darkening forest.
The nearby thing or things started braying
loudly.

One harpy dove out of the tree to glide directly at me. "You—"
"Me?" I blurted, taking a few steps back.
She blustered right into my personal space, her face set in a snarl. "Are you the woodshaper? You were supposed to be here before midmorning!"
I took another step back. "...what?"
"Hazi, that's not her," one of the singers yelled from the group on the ground.
Hazi the Needlessly Hostile hissed through her teeth and spun away from me. "Where is she? That thing could fall any moment now!"
"Yeah, hi, nice to meet you too," I muttered under my breath.

The soup-bowl sized pot was glazed in bands of green, pink, and blue that blended pleasantly together under a sheen of iridescence. Like the feathers of the harpies, the jungle's flora, or the silk of the clothes I'd 'borrowed' from the old lady's spare nest-

I put my new pot on the windowsill and put the artist's handwritten proof-of-purchase with a small stack of receipts next to
my coffeemaker. Odds were good Ladon would question my new acquisition. I'd worry about what to actually do with it later, maybe a fake plant or something.
There wasn't much to do in preparation. I didn't have a lot of stuff to tidy up or square footage to clean. Just go to bed and wait for the second coming of Inspector Javert to grace my humble abode.

The sun sank lower, and if Izoma noticed my unease she did not remark on it. We finished our food and sipped our wine in companionable silence, listening to the murmurs of conversations from the nearby fires. Someone a little further off was strumming aimlessly on some kind of stringed instrument.

Nine and a half hours passed in a blur of beeping machinery, endless boxes and pallets in a maze of metal racking, hissing walkie-talkies and shipping checklists. Heck had cut me off from the coffee sometime after lunch, and Carmen had backed him up with threats to send clowns to my hospital room if I had a heart attack.
That she said this after taking a long swig from a can of neon-tinted energy drink only ticked me off, but I stayed away from the coffeemaker the rest of the day. Because if anyone could find and book the most bizarre and off-putting clown talent in the city on short notice, it would be her.

Coughing, swearing, eyes burning with water I couldn't wipe away, hands bogged down in wings that couldn't fight the river— I kicked furiously, stretching my feet down. The bottom couldn't be that far, and the shore was only about twenty feet away; the current was steady but slow. I was usually a decent enough swimmer that that wasn't too far at all, but at the moment it was like trying to swim from inside a duvet cover.

"Hey, it's sleeping beauty!" Jamie, towing a stack of empty pallets around a corner, saluted cheerfully as I made my way into the warehouse. I gave my esteemed colleague a friendly upraised middle finger in reply.
"Talbot, settle a bet," said someone from behind. "You overslept because you were out clubbing 'till three AM?"
I'd clocked in, fully two hours late, only to run the gauntlet of the peanut gallery in the form of my coworkers. "Good morning, guys. Also, Gene, bite me."
Gene, Cart&Cargo's floor manager and my immediate supervisor second to Heck, handed me a loaded clipboard. "No thanks, I don't know if you've had all your shots."

My eyes snapped open.
There was a popcorn ceiling above me. The air was cool. I lay on my back, my legs tangled in a cheap bedsheet and crumpled secondhand quilt. The sounds of traffic filtered in from a single window. I sat up, staring at my landlord-grey apartment walls.
I ran my hands down my arms just to confirm
the presence of sweatshirt, not feathers.
Finally.
"What the hell was that." I flopped back down and scrubbed plain human hands over my plain human face. A village of bird-women in a tropical paradise.
What daft corner of my brain had all of that come from?

rootwell entrance. Now what? Wake up. I shut my eyes and held my breath. Maybe that would do it— force my body to gasp for air and the next breath I took would smell like my cheap ocean-breeze air freshener and my upstairs neighbor's morning smoke.

Lesili hopped away with a smile as bright as her plumage, calling out to someone at another fire as she darted off. I turned my attention back to the food and Izoma as she handed me a little cup full of a pale purple liquid and set yet another bottle on the fireplace stones between us.
"Last season's tickbane wine," she said, cradling her own cup in her claws. "It's watered down already, so help yourself."

The nest was almost as big as my apartment inside, a trio of slits in the outside wall letting in a decent amount of light. A shallow bowl-shaped depression in the bottom opposite the entrance was filled with a giant cushioned quilt-thing of colorful fabric. A shelf encircled the room at hip-height, piled with a dozen or so woven baskets and stacks of folded cloth, and a decoration of some kind made of knotted cords and beads spanned the wall under the windows.
I wasn't sure what I had expected. A dark musty cavity in the wood with a snarl of sticks, ratty feathers, dead grass, and an unspeakable number of bugs, perhaps. Maybe a giant egg or three. But other than being a little stuffy in the jungle's heat, this was inviting and comfortable. With a little air circulation I could happily take a nap on that plush quilt-pillow, provided I could figure out how to lay down with these wings and the tail.

Izoma reached into her tunic for the bottles she'd brought. "Norami, good evening. This is Maura, and she's here as my guest."
Norami cringed and turned to me. "Forgive me, I don't mean to be rude. We get a lot of troublemakers from other groves, and, well..."
"Don't worry about it." I put on my most winning smile and dropped the sticks I'd been fidgeting with. "I tend to give off that impression, I'm used to it."

I bolted awake with a full-body jerk. My phone toppled over out of my hand and off the bed, hitting the rug with a dull thud. No wind. No falling. Just the faint sound of my upstairs neighbor's footsteps and a quiet, ignorable bassline from across the hall where someone was playing music.

I had to stand up. That would be a start. But even just getting one of my feet under me was off, so of course I looked.
Three long, knobby, scaly toes longer than my hand, with talons caked in wet mud, splayed out in the mat of undergrowth. I shut my eyes and slumped down, bowing and holding my head in those beastly hands, and tried to breathe.
"Okay," I muttered, lightheaded, into the tent the wings formed around me. "No. Stop it. Wake up."

I followed Izoma back to her tree, this time eyeing the undergrowth and every dark hollow under the roots as we went. For sure this would be it, the terrifying moment some toothy roaring beast would leap out, scare me shitlessly awake, and I almost looked forward to it. This had to end somewhere, right?

I caught one of her fluttering hands. "It's fine, Izoma. Thank you. Really."
She smiled, folded her free hand over mine and squeezed. "Sleep well. It was good to have you today."

How hard was it to just stay asleep? How would I even take Heck's advice? Just let it play out? Could you actually do that in a dream where you're plummeting to god-knows-what? Just casually experiment with the theory about dying for real if you die in a dream, very exciting. Hector Beaufort had
better be in the front row at my funeral, crying his eyes out.

Parakeet bent down over the wood. "No worries, oldmother, got you covered!" she chirped, and proceeded to crack a little silver peg against a chipped black rock and send sparks into the kindling.
"Thank you so much, Lesili. And you too, Norami, I always appreciate your cooking." Izoma held up a leaf-wrapped bundle the size of a grapefruit. "Here you are, Maura. Just set it near the fire and it should warm up nicely. Have you had these before? I imagine you're more used to seafood, being from— Portland, yes?"
Parakeet, or Lesili, swiveled her head around over her shoulder to give me such a sharp look I reflexively recoiled. "Portland?"
I quickly collected myself, grabbed the food, and gave her my best yeah what of it smile. "It's on the coast. Tiny place, very boring. You've probably never heard of it."

I found what appeared to be a short knife with a blade made of clear orange glass, strange enough even in this setting. A glass blade? That couldn't be practical, except for maybe one terribly effective stab. Decorative? Ceremonial? A careful test with a claw on the knife's edge proved it to be very sharp, and tapping the flat of the blade made a dull sound like a solid plastic, not like glass at all. That seemed even less practical.

Why wasn't I waking up? Why didn't this feel like a dream?
I took a breath. Everything smelled like mud, sharp and organic, from inhaling river water. The taste of it was sour in the back of my throat. I felt awake. Was I hallucinating? Psychotic break from stress and lack of sleep, was that it? How would I even know?
