A rusty frost guard heater which I spotted on the wall watching over the pools of water and urine in the public toilet next to Nonsuch Mansion in Nonsuch Park. In 2000, my childhood best friend Rubs ended his life when he hanged himself from a tree in the park. This was the second time I’ve visited since then. Not the ideal choice to entertain kids and take my mum for a tea, but time and logistics were not my friend, and despite my own existential crisis, it worked out well. Ice lollies and teas were had. Some tree climbing and sitting in the sun happened. We got chatting with a local couple who had grandkids of their own. It was nice. When I excused myself and spotted this guy rusting on the wall, I thought about the last 26 years since I lost Rubs, and figured he was probably a sparkling new heater back then, ready to do his job to the best of his abilities. I see you, Mr Frost Guard, I see you.

Ray King pictured on the back cover of Cymande's debut album in 1972. He was the first lead vocalist, but only sang on a handful of tracks including 'Getting It Back' which became the title of their recent documentary. The caption below Ray's face reads...
