They are charismatic and brilliant. They perform miracles. They save people's lives, either metaphorically or literally. Within two years, they're dead. Our cast aren't superheroes, though they occasionally act like it. They dress like pop-stars. Hell, on my part, they're often inspired by pop-stars as much as they are by the myths I'm playing with (Example cast: Bast, Astarte, Mithras, Amaterasu, The Morrigan, Lucifer, Ba'al Hammon, etc. We're going to the full range of sources, some with a lot of recognisable star power, and others with less.) Our cast perform before adoring audiences who go into a rapturous frenzy when the gods speak their Glossolalia. No, they don't understand what the gods are saying, but it feels amazing. Underlying it all, the archetypal nature of feeling young and invulnerable writ large. And, most of all, the sense that in our youth-obsessed culture they are equally worshipped and despised. Our cast laugh at it all. They're gods. They're immortal. For two years. The idea of playing superheroes as celebrity isn't exactly new. However, it's always played cynical. The celebrity characters are always the debased bad guys, or at least the cautionary tale and wandering from the road of truth. It's always implicitly arguing that these people are worse than the heroes who came before them because they're on the cover of a magazine and they do a bit of coke. We're not interested in that. We're anti-that. We've all had pop-stars save our life. It's a book for people whose heroes were primarily Bowie, not Batman. They'll also be a lot of fights, drama, emotions, secrets and kissing, because we're not stupid.
