Proofs are developed for the space of piecewise constant functions, showing that any non-identifiable congruence class can be approximated arbitrarily well using identifiable histories. Results are conjectured to extend to an arbitrary-order spline basis. (2/3)

This mirrors findings in popgen, where demographic history is identifiable if a restriction on maximal wiggliness holds. In both cases, this seems like a reasonable regularity condition for a continuous-time evolutionary model giving rise to an ill-posed inverse problem. (3/3)
