Asta’s hand strayed to her hair, reminded her she was no longer a warrior. But she was still her father’s daughter. They could cut her hair, beat her, lock her up. It wouldn’t change her blood.

June was back, hanging over my shoulder. ‘You’re an idiot. Never ever do that again. Now breathe.’ I took a great lungful of air, and then another. It felt human to breathe again. ‘You have control now.’ ‘Of what?’ I managed, before June dumped the manual for Simple Shoggoth Command Protocol in my head. The map/control surface twitched as several new layers updated. I stared at the glyphs for a few moments. Shit code written by something angry, lashing out at the headache it had been given. Even so, subverting an airframe and crew to drop a nuke on the infestation, just to make the screaming stop, was a massive over-reaction. What was the line? ‘Tooled up and itching for an excuse to kick off’. Only it had turned out that, rather than Hookland rescuing me, I was the self-rescuing princess.

I follow the demon through the corridor. I clearly see his trail in the darkness, visible just to me. It leads me from room to room; the demon was quietly opening door after door, entering, searching but not finding, continuing on. The corridor turns left. I stop; he must be here somewhere. I feel him. I feel him so clearly, and I am afraid he feels me too. It is impossible that he does not know I’m on his trail, but he is not in the corridor. He must be in one of the rooms. I continue, following hot prints on the door handles and then, suddenly, I stop, holding my breath. The next door handle is not marked by his hand, he didn’t get that far. This means he is here, in the room right before me.
