The scientific strides stand to send shock waves through the energy sector. The studies are sporadically being used to help build climate liability cases against oil and gas companies. But lawyers, scientists and insurers expect them to increasingly appear in court filings. The commercial stakes are enormous. A 2022 analysis from a financial industry forum found that fossil fuel companies could face cumulative losses of “over $100 billion in the most severe litigation outcome,” citing data from the consulting company Verisk Analytics. Since then, more than a dozen new climate liability cases have been filed, including one lawsuit that is seeking more than $51.5 billion in compensation related to a deadly heat wave.

Terms such as “genocide”, “ecocide” and “crime against humanity” are often heard as superlatives to describe atrocious things done to certain groups of people who merit our empathy and outrage in response. But “crime against humanity” does not only mean “this thing is abominable on a scale almost beyond belief”. It implicates all of us as victims. Seeking to destroy, in whole or in part, a cultural grouping of human beings is a crime against our common, interconnected humanity. The same is true of wreaking mass destruction against the ecosystems that we exist within, collectively. The Trump administration’s crimes are not simply being committed against polar bears and ice caps and forests – these crimes are being committed against me, against you. The film’s most alarming segment is about the next frontier of advertising: your dreams. That the final frontier of producing consumer desire could be our subconscious is a scarier thought than any horror film could provoke.

This one is genuinely educational, despite lasting less than two minutes and containing significantly more pelvic grinding than you usually find in this sort of messaging.
With meteorologists predicting an El Niño coming at the end of 2026, many scientists predict global temperatures will approach the vaunted 2 degrees Celsius threshold. McKay sees this as a great chance for the new Exxon partnership to flourish. "We want to do puppet shows teaching kids to run from fires. And maybe something with Bon Jovi, I love those guys, about the food supply chain collapsing. I don't know," said McKay. "You should see the check Exxon wrote us. I haven't seen that many zeros since that Affleck picture about Pearl Harbor."

McKay went on to explain his joint campaign with Exxon is titled "Falling Off The Cliff A Tiny Bit Slower" and will highlight all of the remarkable work done by Exxon's PR team over the years in using the word sustainable' 15% more than any other oil company. Several online critics accused the Oscar- winning filmmaker of "selling his soul to the devil." but Mckay seems unbothered. "Who believes in a pitchfork-wielding, pointy-tailed Devil anymore? The world’s military power exists in large part to deliver the profit from resources – especially oil – to banks and shareholders, commodity traders and asset managers, hedge funds and private equity companies. For the same purpose, the infrastructure of persuasion – lobbyists, media, social media algorithms – is mobilised to ensure the most amoral, sadistic and bellicose people are selected as leaders, as they will keep oil and other commodities flowing for the benefit of capital, whatever the human cost may be. Their opponents are demonised, alternatives dismissed as “unrealistic”, “unpopular” and “unaffordable”. This is why we consistently underestimate other people’s desire for change. For example, one study shows that 89% of the world’s people want more action to stop climate breakdown. Yet the same people believe they’re a minority. At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, surveys consistently showed that a vast majority hoped to emerge into a better world, where health, wellbeing and environmental protection took precedence over economic growth. But governments spent billions on restoring our dysfunctions.
Wirkola came to McKay with the idea for "Thrash" five years ago. "At the time, the premise seemed like a very heightened climate scenario," McKay says. "But the crazy part is that in the interim, the idea of dangerous predators being pushed toward human civilization is now pretty much happening every day."
