And I hope that the only furry book on my list this year is my number 1 underscores just how great of a book it is rather than suggesting some sort of bias on my part; I’m usually harsher on things I’m closer to. But Rukis has this absolutely incredible ability to write stories that are meaningful and to fill them with characters that are lovable and real and to make that story 800 pages– of small text– long, and to still make you want more. That, by the way, is the difference that took this from an honorable mention to my number 1 this year. I read this book as it was serialized on Patreon last year into early this year, so it didn’t feel right to put it on my list of best books I read this year, but I knew there were some minor changes and a little bit extra tacked onto the full book, so I’ve since reread it, and can now officially say I read it in 2024. (The additional scenes also happened to include my absolute favorite character in the Red Lantern universe and threw a lot of extra intrigue into what happened in the years between Red Lantern Windrose and Hearttheft. This has nothing to do with this review, but I’m very excited.)
