In this talk on the 125th anniversary of the venerable Bangalore Club library, two of the founders of the Servants of Knowledge will argue that libraries are not only relevant in our modern world, they form the bedrock of democracy, education, and economic opportunity. In the context of post-colonial countries, libraries serve as vital democratic institutions that promote constitutional values including equality, and empower citizens to participate actively in political and cultural deliberations. In this talk Lawrence Liang and Carl Malamud will discuss their efforts at the Servants of Knowledge to create a public library of over 6 lakh books plus over 6 lakh issues of the Official Gazettes of India.
