I have a lot of feelings about the public reaction to it, but I want to focus my energy on the path forward and the needs of Maine. Mainers showed up in a huge way in the primary. That's really exciting and it's necessary if we're going to beat Susan Collins. Maine voters made their voices heard. They made it clear that they want a candidate who isn't a part of the political realm--someone who supports Medicare for All, workers' rights, and reproductive rights, a person that fights with our communities against ICE, and, most importantly, someone who isn't afraid to speak truth to power. All of those things bring me so much hope. I'm proud of Maine for stepping up and I'm hopeful that we can use that energy to make some incredible policy changes, bring relief to struggling Mainers and beat Susan Collins in November. If you've been following along on social media, you've seen that even after the primary, I've continued to show up for Maine in any way I can. As a young voice, a union leader, public health professor, and lifelong feminist, I've championed all of the things that Maine has said that they want in a candidate. I want to thank you all for your incredible messages of support since the primary. I'm still here and I still believe that I'm the best person to take on Susan Collins. We're going to see things start to move really quickly over the next week. We don't know what the future of the Senate race looks like, but one thing I can say with certainty is, whether I'm in an elected position or not, I'm always going to be here-standing up for Mainers and leading us forward.

I stand by my previous defense of Platner. Offensive tattoos and sexting-out-of-wedlock struck me as the most Marine shit ever. I literally know Marines who've done both but later grew up and became decent guys. (Hi if you're reading this!) I still believe in my bones that people like that deserve to have a shot at public office and that our country would be better for it. But the Marines I'm describing were never accused of more serious things like sexual assault. People were right to give him a chance before; and they're right to drop him now. "But there were so many red flags," the argument goes, pointing to the sexting, tattoo, and Reddit posts. Think about that argument for a moment: it means that people should be disqualified from public office for things there isn't evidence they actually did, just "red flags" from which they can supposedly be divined. Ruling out anyone with Reddit post-level flaws bars millions of otherwise decent people from politics. The only people left are the exact kind of squeaky-clean, McKinsey consultant politicians that was the entire point of my Platner article in the first place.

Financialized housing has embedded itself into Canadian life. It has become a load bearing pillar of our entire society. To remove it will require more than a few thousand NGO-run units. It will need more than even the public homebuilding campaigns of the 1940s and 1970s. It will require a new vision of how we handle retirement, banking, productivity, and economic growth. Until our leaders find the courage to put forward such a vision, we will be locked in the same pattern we’ve been repeating for half a century, one where, as Justin Trudeau famously said, “housing needs to retain its value.”

In his reasons, Justice Morgan found "[T]here is no reason to believe that Brown and Canadaland have any valid defence." The court also found that "the cynicism of Brown's explanation not only accentuates the defamatory sting of his words, but could be considered high handed and oppressive," that it suggested "the Plaintiff's feelings are worth nothing," and that the defamation was "more a personal attack on the plaintiff's character" than legitimate journalism. Canadaland brands itself as Canada's media accountability outlet, whose stated purpose is to hold other journalists to higher standards. The court's findings describe an outlet that republished a known false claim, ignored documents in its own possession that disproved it, and never asked its subject to respond. These are the very failures Canadaland claims to exist to call out in others.
