But in what sense are practices the source of the normativity? Practices involve, on the one hand, a crude training process, whereby the novice learns to react in a certain way to certain situations or stimuli (what Wittgenstein calls Abrichtung or drilling). The importance of this process lies in the fact that it enables the novice or pupil to grasp regularities and uniformities." On the other hand, and this is a point that Wittgenstein missed in previous works, the learning processes that are at the origin of practices also involve an inculcation and development of normative attitudes. The novice is not subjected to a pure behaviouristic process; thanks to her interactions with a teacher or instructor, for instance, she masters gradually the distinction between correct and incorrect performances. This interaction should not be understood in intellectualist terms as a process based on explicit rule formulations and interpretations. The following passage is quite significant in this context: But if a person has not yet got the concepts, I'll teach him to use the words by means of examples and by exercises. - And when I do this, I do not communicate less to him than I know myself.43 We manitest our understanding of rules through actions, and it is also through actions that we learn rules. Wittgenstein used the term "normative" in connection with logic to show the difference between exact and indefinite concepts. Normative sciences are not aimed at justifying a predetermined standard or target. Rather they assume a norm as hypothetically given, without giving reasons why it should be followed. However, normative theories name the necessary conditions or standards that must be accomplished in order to comply with a specific norm. As such, normative theories are descriptive in a way. However, Wittgenstein did not adopt such a radical standpoint nor did he reject logic as a whole. He said this: It is essential to logic to draw boundaries, but no such boundaries are drawn in the language we speak. But this doesn't mean that logic represents language incorrectly, or that it represents an ideal language. Its task is to portray a colourful, blurred reality as a pen-and-ink drawing. According to his view, logic is characterized by metaphor and thereby portrays the blurredness of language.
