Photo of Louise Casemore with YouthWrite and Winter WordPlay logos. Louise Casemoreis an award-winning playwright, actor, and proud prairie dweller. Based in Alberta on Treaty 6 and 7 Territory, she is the recipient of the ATP/Enbridge Playwright’s Award, two Elizabeth Sterling Haynes awards, the Edmonton Artist Trust Fund, and was once declared to be the trivia champion of her family household. Original plays she has written and performed include OCD, Functional, GEMINI, and Undressed, which premiered at Alberta Theatre Projects in 2022. Her creative impulse is to explore real life in her writing, investigating the world around her with curiosity and humour. Louise remains active in the community by teaching, research, and hosting readings and artist events. She will make any excuse to spend time with writers, because she thinks they are the very coolest. Fun fact: Louise was a YouthWriter from 1996-1998!

Instructor Highlight: Stephen Heatley! Stephen Heatley is a theatre director, dramaturge, playwright, sometime actor, and teacher. He was part of the original YouthWrite team in 1996, and is delighted with the opportunity to spend some quality time with aspiring writers. Stephen has worked in professional theatre for over 50 years. During his 12 years as Artistic Director of Theatre Network in Edmonton, he directed over 30 world premiere productions. He also spent five years as Associate Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre. Stephen has been involved with new play development across Western Canada. From 2015 to 2023, he was the Head of the Department of Theatre and Film at the University of British Columbia, where he is currently a faculty member. His most recent productions are 'Hosanna' at UBC, 'Heels of Glory' in London, England, and 'Where We Are' at Saskatchewan's Station Arts Centre. Daniel J. Schneider is a comic artist, illustrator, and storyteller hailing from his family’s cattle ranch near Edmonton. He holds the honour of being the first Comic shop Artist in Residence at Happy Harbour Comics and has been privileged to be teaching students about how to create comics for the past 9 years. You can find his work in comics such as Gamesworkshop’s “Reforged,” “The Saga of the Jack of Spades,” “Ape Court,” and soon the webtoon “Sire & Cub.”
Liam Monaghan is a writer, theatre artist, researcher, and educator based on Treaty 6 Territory in Edmonton, Alberta. His practice currently focuses on life writing and (auto)biography, archive-based artistic research, and revitalizing the queer past through performance. Liam’s plays have been produced in cities across Canada and include 2023's 'Strange/Familiar,; winner of the Sharon Pollock Prize awarded by the Alberta Playwright’s Network. He has published articles in Ploughshares, Alberta Views Magazine, and The Dalhousie Review, and an essay on autofictional playwriting is forthcoming from HowlRound Theatre Commons. Liam teaches in The Writing Centre at MacEwan University Library.
Masani (she/her) is born and raised in Mohkinstis (Calgary, AB). She immersed into learning about her ancestral roots through dance at the tender age of three, specializing in West African and Caribbean dance. Upon the introduction to dance, Masani found passion for the West African tradition, culture, and style. Through training under Michèle Moss-Johnston at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Masani was able to build her foundation. Still working very closely with Michèle Moss-Johnston and various other artists from Guinea, West Africa, Masani finds every opportunity to take master classes from artists from various regions of Africa, including Congo, Uganda, Ghana, Mali, Guinea, and Zimbabwe. Throughout the years, Masani has worked with various studios and professional groups across Canada. It is her mission to keep the art and culture alive, from soul to sole!
Amanda Torres is an independent animator. Her love of painting, printmaking, collaging, and drawing make up her multi-media animation style. She loves to teach, whether it's about animation, music, or her area of academic expertise: physics and math. In her free time, she makes and distributes zines. Her hopes are to bring together her talents to aid in community building.
