A hillside in Otago, New Zealand, that has been worn and eroded by many years of gold mining, mainly during the 19th century.
The photo shows a round jar, wider than it is tall, with two symmetrical handles that rise from the upper side of the jar and then curve through ninety degrees to join the top of the spout, which is at the centre of the top of the jar. There are decorative bands around the bowl of the jar and small decorative drawings on the upper part of the jar, either side of the spout.

These large spherical boulders were formed within mudstone millions of years ago. Calcite from circulating groundwater formed cement within the mudstone around shell fragments or pebbles. As the the soft mudstone erodes, the harder boulders are left behind. The Māori name for the Moeraki Boulders is Te Kaihīnaki. They are of immense historical and cultural significance to Kāi Tahu whānui. They represent round food baskets and gourds washed ashore. Source: https://www.whitestonegeopark.nz/moeraki-boulders
