The third criterion, of a handicapping condition, is obviously met by the traditional psychiatric categories, but previous critics, such as Garmezy (1978), have queried whether it is met by some of the newly introduced categories such as "avoidant disorder" or "schizoid disorder" or "oppositional disorder." His questioning of these categories appears fully justified. For example, "oppositional disorder" is to be diagnosed if at least two of the following five behaviors have lasted at least six months: violations of minor rules, temper tantrums, argumentativeness, provocative behavior, or stubbornness. That description—and only two are required for the diagnosis—sounds like the behavior of a lot of children one meets socially and not at all like psychiatric disorder. Of course, these behaviors are often involved in psychiatric conditions, but on their own they do not sound sufficient for a psychiatric diagnosis. At the very least, one must ask for validating data.

Nerve clusters appear to be centralized in the central core, with only small radiodendrite receivers located in its legs. Frame Lightweight (8 ticks) Appearance Anaveros looks something like a nightmarish cross between a spider and a suspension bridge. Its numerous, spindly legs propel a central core suspended above the ground solely by the tension of its many anchored chains. The core contains the whole of Anaveros’ sensor package and neurocircuitry; it commands its legs to move by tightbeam radio, allowing even damaged legs to continue to receive commands. Briefing Anaveros is one of the youngest Deifics, a fact made evident by its reliance on transcendent forces as a weapon. While it has no conventional ranged or energetic weaponry, Anaveros is capable of reanimating dead biomass—and of commanding the resulting undead. Of course, this ability isn’t perfect: death is not a single process, and so Anaveros cannot undo it simply. It must fill in the wounds of its undead with its own transcendent force, inducing a burnt, sickly-sweet smell that has become the hallmark of its presence. Feeding this process demands massive amounts of energy, both to fuel the resurrections and to sustain the computational power required to create and maintain its unliving thralls. # MAKING A ROLL When the game tells you to roll, you'll roll a pool of dice (which is abbreviated **d**) and use the single highest result. The main types of rolls are **checks** and **strain rolls.** When you roll a **check,** assemble your dice pool as follows: - 1 for sheer luck. - +1 for a relevant skill. - +1 for a relevant domain. - +1 for a relevant knack. - +1 per **advantage.** Advantages come from special abilities, and they stack; if you have a lot of special abilities, you could get a lot of advantages. - -1 per **disadvantage.** Disadvantages might also come from special abilities your character has, but they can also come from locations, NPC abilities, **fallouts,** and other locations in the world. LEGENDS The following may or may not be true about Daymares, as interests you and your table. - The Waking Forge's name is more literal than anyone knows. The Dayfire Citadel contains an enormous reservoir of humans trapped in an electronervously-induced hallucinatory state. It is from their dread visions that Daymares are made. - Daymares are fragments of a dead god which predates the cosmos. The Pentarchs are the five largest pieces, whole bones and organs to the chips and flakes of individual Daymares. - Daymares are idealized visions of humanity's future. Each Pentarch is a former human, submitting its legion to the universe as final proof of our destiny. - In spite of their seeming implacability, Daymare Pentarchs have complex social and interpersonal relationships with each other. The nature and intensity of these relationships varies with the teller of the story, but the intensity of the connection between Dove and Uriel remains a consistent feature. - Daymares are the forgotten armies of an interstellar empire, locked away by alien heroes in a time before humanity ever saw the stars. The Pentarchs are Daymare royalty, seeking to rebuild their kingdom atop the husk of Earth.
The **Naphtha Choke** consists of Crowns that wield viscous hydrocarbons. These iridescent tars are difficult to wash away by water and can linger in an environment for decades if not properly cleaned. The Choke's Crowns are the most agile of the three strains; cored by naphtha reservoirs and equipped with six arms each, they stalk the land in search of biomatter to fill their violent gullets. - **Field — Liquid Pyre:** Naphthic Crowns are highly flammable and have an unfortunate tendency to spatter. When striders engage any number of Naphthic Crowns, start a 6-step clock called **Liquid Pyre** and tick it once for each Naphthic Crown nearby. Every time a Naphthic Crown is struck with fire, electricity, or excessive heat, make a 1d **fortune roll.** If this roll is higher than the number of ticks in the clock, tick the clock up by the result. If the roll is lower, the stray sludge explodes; inflict consequences (harm, complications as things catch fire, etc.) as appropriate. Then, reset the clock as the Crown begins to churn more sludge.
