This county fair was the fifth annual San Francisco County Fair. That explains why this here county fair was just a little different. The cows at the Fort Mason event that took place over the weekend were cardboard - all but two anyway. The pigs were only exotic visitors from out-of-town. The contests weren't bronco bustin' or horseshoe pitchin', they were competing in parking races, fog calling and wine tasting. That wasn't Buck Owens singing his country boy heart out either at the Biggest Singles Dance Ever. It was Heartbeat. Outside, in the typically late summer San Francisco weather of wind and fog, there were such cosmopolitan country fair booths as psychics, crafts and clothing alongside displays for AT&T, PacTel, Greenpeace and the San Francisco Conservation Corps. The most famous event, the Impossible Parking Space Race, was won by Roger LaRue, a theatrical producer in San Francisco. His winning time was 35 minutes - eight minutes slower than last year's winner, John Colman. Colman, who won the race three years in a row, did not participate this year. This year's race contestants had to find spaces in each of four neighborhoods: North Beach, Chinatown, Union Square and the Inner Richmond. Unlike previous years, colored zones, Saturday and fifteen-minute-only spaces did not count. These changes and the distance of the Inner Richmond area from the downtown areas helped increase the completion times 'of the contestants. Many people, including many professional planners express a deep commitment to – and desire for – densified built forms. That density should be an object of desire in and of itself is curious to me, because density is simply a measure of things or people in an area. As a metric, density alone is not driving people to give up their free time to speak for or against a proposed development being built in the name of densification. As these images – both sentimental and visceral – dramatically attest, there's more going on here; density is standing in for other deeper, sometimes inchoate individual and collective desires.

X 51m • A vehicle collision occurred this morning in the area of Grant Ave and Jackson St at approx. 7:43 AM involving a driver and 2 pedestrians on the sidewalk. Despite lifesaving efforts, a victim was declared deceased at the hospital. Read more below. CAN FRANCISC SEP.D FATAL VEHICLE COLLISION: GRANT AVE & JACKSON ST On 03/27/2026 at approximately 7:43 a.m., San Francisco Police officers responded to the area of Grant Avenue and Jackson Street regarding a vehicle collision. Officers arrived on scene and located two victims suffering from injuries. The victims were transported by paramedics to a local hospital. Despite the life saving efforts of first responders and medical staff, a victim was declared deceased at the hospital. Another adult victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A preliminary investigation determined that the driver, a 76-year-old male, was attempting to park his vehicle when the vehicle collided with two pedestrians on the sidewalk and then into a building. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Impairment due to alcohol and or drugs do not appear to be a factor at this time. Video from Dec. 11, obtained by Power Play, shows Lurie's Rivian colliding with an F- Market & Wharves streetcar heading southbound on Market Street. The $134,000 electric vehicle (bought and donated to the city, by Lurie himself) stops abruptly at the intersection of Octavia Boulevard while turning on its police lights, attempting to make a U-turn at a prohibited left-turn intersection. The streetcar does not have time to stop and collides with the Rivian, pushing it a couple of feet to the left of the road. The train operator reported that someone onboard was injured, according to SMTA records; however, video shot from inside the streetcar doesn't appear to show anyone with a serious injury. A records request to the city attorney's office returned no accident-related injury claims against the city in connection with the event.

As an avid and daily cyclist, I believe we don’t need to make any significant changes to our neighborhood for biking. Our district is largely a residential neighborhood and is already one of the easier and safer neighborhoods for biking in the city. The key to making our streets even safer for both pedestrians and cyclists is better enforcement. To achieve this, I want to explore the establishment of a police substation for the Tarval Police Station. This move would improve traffic and pedestrian safety by reducing police response times.

He would be wise to pause ICE enforcement in the Twin Cities to ease tensions and consider a less provocative strategy. We thought our building was going to catch on fire. Power immediately went out, fire dept arrived, don't know if that's what caused this or if some other event cause the fire.

In 2008, a tenant filed a complaint that the lights in her unit often dimmed or went out, and some cords on her electronic devices felt hot to the touch. One had melted. Roberts told the city she was unaware of the issue until she was contacted about the complaint. A city inspector told the tenant that her portable heaters were overloading the circuits. But the inspection also brought new scrutiny to the illegal unit issue and found “life hazards present,” including: unapproved wiring and plumbing, no approved smoke detectors, no approved permanent heat source, “unapproved windows and/or doors for light, ventilation and/or fire escape/escape,” “unapproved second means of egress” and the ceiling height issue. Updates in the city’s complaint tracking website indicate that within a couple of weeks, Roberts had filed for a permit for the electrical work that needed to be done and hired a contractor to complete it. A follow-up inspection from the city a month and a half later showed the electrical issues were resolved. The hazardous wiring complaint case was also closed.
One of them came from Melanie Hutzler, who lives in Canton without a car and whose mobility is limited by arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Hutzler, 51, relies on government food assistance and said she was cautious about spending money. At the time of her complaint, she could reach two food stores on foot. Getting to the Save A Lot grocery required crossing a busy road, but getting to a Dollar General did not. “Every single time we went into that store, something would ring up wrong,” she told the Guardian. “They never had a manager there that would fix the prices.” Hutzler said she would walk the cashier over to the shelf and point out the listed price, only to be told, “There’s nothing we can do about it.”

The level of detail and craftsmanship is truly astonishing from the melted candies and detailed frosting to the delicious gingerbread cookies.
