Tootsie is a film about a cis man learning how cis females live. Dustin Hoffman in his AFI interview * said he only wanted to make the film if he passed. His ultimate takeaway is that he learns how superficial double standards prevented him from being with interesting modest looking women. That’s all well and good. Tootsie is not a film about queer people. But, Some Like it Hot, has queer representation. The characters pass as trans, but not cis. The film ends with the man telling Jack Lemmon’s character “nobody’s perfect“ as he plans marriage and shows he knew all along. So joke’s on the audience if they were “suspending disbelief”. Wilder’s subversive film was made during the Hays code. In Tootsie queerness was unmentionable.
