I’m sitting in a police station, knocking my feet against the legs of my chair, suddenly twelve years old again. I know I’m back in my own body because I remember this moment well. It’s the moment I got a family. Not that Maman wasn’t family. She gave birth to me, though I know she never wanted children. She raised me as well as she could as her body failed her more each day. But in all honesty, it makes sense that this vision of the past starts here. There was no life before Letti. There was nothing before her—nothing worth mentioning, at least.
“Actually…” I look up at them through bleary eyes, seeing their shining face blur at the edges. “I think I like the sound of ‘wife.’” “Really?” “Yeah.” They smile down at me, then kiss the top of my head, murmuring into my hair. “And I think I'll shorten my last name, too. You know, take my wife's.” “Éd,” I shake my head, letting my senses fill with them—their cheeky half-smile, the smell of trees, the taste of their tongue still on my lips, the feel of their chest beneath my palm, heart beating a gloriously steady rhythm against my fingertips. “Six years, and you can still stun me.” “Right back at you, gorgeous."
“Hey.” I try not to scare the shit out of him, but it does not work. Luckily, he doesn’t scream and alert PJ, he just gasps and clutches at his chest. “Éd, what the fuck?” Lucha smacks me across the chest. “Don’t sneak up on people like that. You’re lucky it’s not a full moon.” “Why, ‘cause you would’ve transformed and ripped me apart?” “Maybe.” He only sounds a little petulant. Tiara laughs.
