I rarely travel without a basic survival kit which has a space blanket or an Orange emergency Bivy, will try to deploy if expecting aerial search. Wildland Firefighter magazine November 2000 Losing Idaho’s Clear Creek Battle Cancelled Retardant Marks Start of $60 Million fire Like so many fire starts this summer, the Clear Creek Fire, west of Salmon, Idaho, grew into a raging project fire with daily acreage gains measured in miles. Unlike suppression efforts on other fires, however, Salmon-Challis National Forest (SCF) fire managers chose not to use all available resources to try to bring the fire under control during initial attack. One issue in question is the decision by SCF officials to cancel aerial retardant requested by initial attack crews. And the rest is history, including over 200,000 acres burned and more than $60 million spent on the 2000 season's largest single fire.
